Calling All Puppy Lovers!
We have joined forces with a breeder of English Golden Retrievers who will be providing us with approximately 10-12 puppies from 3 breedings late this spring. Our goal, unlike most reputable service dog facilities, is to keep these puppies in house instead of having them raised by puppy raisers. With assistance from community volunteers, the puppies will receive socializing outings to gain exposure to a variety of sights and sounds. However, the puppies will not be allowed to socialize with each other. They will be exposed to other puppies and dogs but we believe that to achieve a strong “two animal pack” that each puppy must learn that all good comes from their “person.”
From 8 weeks of age to 6 months of age, the puppies will be introduced to “Free Shaping” and very little negative attention. They will learn to remain in their handler’s bubble for all play times and for other forms of rewards. Rewards will include treats, verbal praise, toys, physical praise and freedom. Negative behaviors will be ignored as much as possible and positive behaviors such as calmness and focus will be rewarded. At 6 months of age, the puppies will receive 4 weeks of formal obedience training, still continuing their Free Shaping sessions. At 7 months of age, the puppies will be matched with an applicant and specific skills for that applicant will be trained from 7 months of age until the puppy is approximately 1 year of age.
